“The Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions; for life is kind of Chess in which we have often points to gain and competitors or adversaries to contend with and in which there is a vast variety of good and ill events, that are in some degree the effect of prudence, or want of it.”
~ Benjamin Franklin

75 Attend all Girls Chess Camp
My name is Anjana Murali and I am a junior at Shorewood High School, WI. For my girl scout gold award project, I conducted a free 2-day chess camp for girls in Milwaukee on Dec.14th and Dec.15th, 2012. I decided to conduct this unique project to encourage more girls to play chess, participate in chess tournaments, and to teach valuable life skills through 64 squares. The 75 girls who came to the camp learned how to play chess, competed in a five game tournament, and received free medals, chess sets, girl scout cinch bags, girl scout pencils, chess videos, chess books etc. In addition, snacks, lunch, and t-shirts were provided for each girl. Those who won the first three place in each category won trophies. The main issue I wanted to address through this camp was to remove the gender disparity in the chess game as chess has been viewed as a male dominated sport for many years.

The Wisconsin Chess Rating
by Bob Patterson-Sumwalt
Students and adults playing in WSCF tournaments receive a Wisconsin rating. WSCF
has been calculating this rating since its inception in 2004. Since then over 4500 players have participated in WSCF events. In the 2010 – 2011 season alone, 1400 players played in WSCF tournaments. From this pool of players WSCF calculates the Wisconsin rating using the WinTDchess tournament management software.

Using Chess as an Educational Tool
by Bob Patterson-Sumwalt Chess has been touted for centuries as a way of
educating the mind in preparation for life. The same is true
today: Googling “Chess in Education” results in 998,000 hits. Interest in chess as an educational tool began in 1779, when Benjamin Franklin wrote:

The Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities
of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired and strengthened
by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions, for life is a kind of Chess, in
which we have often points to gain, and competitors or adversaries to contend with, and
in which there is a vast variety of good and ill events that are, in some degree, the
effect of prudence, or the want of it. By playing at Chess, then, we may learn foresight,
circumspection and caution. |

Chess Empowers Young Minds
by Bob Patterson-Sumwalt
There are many myths and stories about the
origins of chess. According to David Shenk,
author of The Immortal Game: A History of
Chess, one of the oldest myths tells of two
successive Indian Kings, Hashran and Balhait.
King Hashran asked his sage to invent a game
symbolizing man’s dependence on destiny and
fate...
