Camps
WSCF offers instruction across three camp levels: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced.
Beginning Camp is recommended for students who are new to chess. Participants need not but may have attended one or two prior camps and a small number of tournaments; if rated, their USCF/WSCF rating is below 750. This level emphasizes core fundamentals, including sound opening principles, improved board vision, and six introductory checkmate patterns. Many students benefit from attending Beginning Camp two to three times to develop consistent proficiency.
Intermediate Camp is intended for students who have demonstrated command of Beginning Camp concepts. Instruction centers on tactical themes, chess notation, and structured game analysis. Enrollment requires a USCF or WSCF rating of 750.
Advanced Camp is designed for accomplished tournament players with a USCF/WSCF rating of 1000 or higher who have earned trophies in the WSCF Open Division. The curriculum features formal opening preparation, middlegame planning, and endgame strategy, with an emphasis on converting advantages through precise endgame play.
You can register for the beginning camps via the host recreation departments. Please see the complete list here.
