WSCF instructors will lead chess camps over summer break. Each camp will be 3 hours per day for 5 days, Monday through Friday. Camps take place from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (beginner session) and 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (intermediate session).
Beginner Camp Description
This camp is for those new to chess or those that have a little experience (rating less than 800) and want to improve their chess skills. Students will focus on chess fundamentals including opening strategy, the 7 basic checkmates, and tactics such as Forks, Pins and Discovered Check. Students will experience a balance of chess play and instruction. They will compete in a 5-round tournament with the top 3 players winning trophies and everyone else receiving a medal. The intermediate camp will cover all phases of the game including chess notation and game analysis. Those that have played for two to three years are recommended to take the Intermediate camp. For students entering grades 2 – 8.
Intermediate Camp Description
This camp is for experienced players with many years of tournament experience and with WSCF, USCF, Chess.com, or LiChess ratings over 800. All phases of the game will be covered in this class. There will be a focus on openings, endings, 10 to 12 basic mating patterns, and tactical play. Students will experience a balance of chess play and instruction. They will compete in a 5-round tournament with the top 3 players winning trophies and everyone else receiving a medal. In the Intermediate class all phases of the game will be covered including chess notation and game analysis. For students entering grades 2 – 12.
